Community shop opens in Shirley

Information, advice and support is now on the doorstep for Shirley residents, with the opening of a new one-stop Community Services centre at 25 Acheson Avenue.

The project breathes life back into the street, which has many empty shop units.Following a dawn blessing last month, the centre was opened by Christchurch Central MP Tim Barnett. The centre brings together under one roof for the first time Christchurch City Council's Community Development and Recreation Advisers, Housing New Zealand, Canterbury Police and the District Truancy Service.

The centre is part of a wider process to revitalise the area. The Acheson Avenue Urban Renewal Project gives local residents the chance to determine what's needed in the community, now and in the future. The initiative has also resulted in the opening of a new Neighbourhood Centre and the development of initiatives for children, youth and adults.

Plans are now under way for the upgrade of nearby McFarlane Park and further expansion of the area's recreation and leisure opportunities.
