Time to talk growth options

To get the future communities we desire for our families and ourselves, we must manage the impact development has on our quality of life in Greater Christchurch.

Decisions made today will affect our children, grand-children and future generations. That's why the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy process is under way and why you should take part.

A public discussion with local mayors is being held at the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu on Tuesday, 19 April, from 7.30 to 9.30pm, to raise awareness of the options being considered to manage growth in Greater Christchurch. The mayors of Christchurch, Banks Peninsula, Selwyn, Waimakariri and Environment Canterbury chairman Sir Kerry Burke will speak about the challenges growth presents for their areas, and their visions for the future of greater Christchurch.

Chris Laidlaw, a Greater Wellington Regional Councillor and former All Black, will be the meeting facilitator. Guest speaker Dr Joel Cayford, an Auckland Regional Councillor, will talk about how Auckland dealt with growth and some of the mistakes made. The public discussion is part of the Options stage of the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy. To encourage public feedback, an Options discussion booklet has been distributed to City Council offices, service centres and libraries around the city, as well as in Banks Peninsula, Selwyn, and Waimakariri districts, and at the Environment Canterbury main office on Kilmore Street.

The booklet outlines four options proposed to manage the effects of growth in the greater Christchurch area and includes a feedback form for people to have their say about which option or mix of options they prefer.

Visit www.greaterchristchurch.org.nz for a summary of the Options and information about how to have your say.

The options consultation closes on Friday, 3 June.
