High schools’ litter resource updated

The City That Shines?, a free teaching resource kit being used by many of the city's high schools, has recently been updates as a result of feedback from teachers.

The material was first produced and made available to school English departments in 2002 with the aim of making students more aware that litter - on the streets and in waterways - is everyone's problem. Twenty-seven of the 32 Christchurch high schools' English departments ordered the resource. Recent feedback was very positive but also showed there are gaps in the information available.

As a result, extra resources have been designed to support the teaching resource. A fact sheet called All About Litter provides an overview of the issue in Christchurch and who is involved. Some clever examples of students work have also been produced for classroom use. Funding for the resource came from the two areas of Council that grapple with the cleaning up of litter in Christchurch - the Transport and City Streets Unit and the Greenspace Unit.

The All About Litter fact sheet can be viewed and downloaded by students via the Council's Homework Central website.

Teachers have been sent information about how to access the examples of students' work.
