Migrant tales

Realising that "how're you going?" is a greeting and not a question is just one of many things Mary Ann Joseph had to learn after moving here from Singapore.

Mary Ann talked to customers and staff at Fendalton Community Library about her experience as part of a series of lunchtime Race Relations Day events at Christchurch City Libraries.

Originally from Malaysia, Mary Ann decided to migrate to NZ because she had family here, and also wanted a change from her business career. Nearly four years on, she's happily settled in Ilam and works as a child counsellor.

"I'm glad I didn't know about all the difficulties I'd encounter along the way, because it's been a good, wonderful journey," says Mary Ann.

"It's given me time to reflect, work out where I am, who I am and what I'm doing with my life. Coming to New Zealand has given me that opportunity and I wouldn't have changed that for anything.

"Being at Fendalton Library today gives me the chance to say that its libraries are one of the very best things about Christchurch. They're wonderful, welcoming places, really easy to join, and they've really helped me to feel like I belong here."
