Major Sewer Upgrade

Work is continuing on the Council's $40 million major sewer upgrade, a 10-year project to meet the expected growth of the city and to reduce sewer overflows into the Heathcote and Avon rivers during wet weather.

Construction of the new Pump Station 11 is underway on the corner of Bass and Randolph streets in Linwood, replacing the existing station at a cost of around $7.3m. The new pump station will feed sewage to the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant through Pressure Main 11, a new 1.2m wide, 3.7km concrete pipeline which is now complete. Contractors are resealing the road and restoring areas of Linwood Park affected by construction.

In the south-east of the city, work has begun on Pressure Main 21, which will link existing pump stations in Beckenham so that during peak flows sewage can be pumped direct to Pump Station 20, minimising the chance of overflows into the Heathcote River.

Work has started in Eastern Terrace and will take around five months to complete.
