Landfill construction on track
Construction work on the regional landfill at Kate Valley in North Canterbury is in its final stages, with Transwaste Canterbury confident the development will remain on schedule.
South Island companies Taggart Earthmoving and Taylors Contracting have been on-site since July last year, undertaking the major earthworks project.
"This is a huge job and involves moving over a million cubic metres of material," says Gareth James, Canterbury Waste Services' General Manager.
"The very wet end to 2004 did slow things but the companies have worked solidly and we're not facing any major delays."
The other main constructio contracts for the regional landfill have also been awarded, with Fulton Hogan Canterbury completing the internal roading and services in the landfill site, Works Infrastructure reconstructing 5km of Mt Cass Road, and Hopkins Engineering building a new bridge required there.
The total cost of the landfill construction is expected to be around $21.6m.Transwaste aims to have the regional landfill at Kate Valley completed and ready before the existing landfill at Burwood in Christchurch closes by the end of next month.
