Largest Tapestry in New Zealand

Marilyn Rea-Menzies at the loomMore than 2000 people have contributed their artistic touches to Tapestry 2000 which, when finished, will be the largest single tapestry in the nation.

It is being crafted in Christchurch Tapestry Workshop, at the Arts Centre, and is due to be finished in August, after which it will hang in Christchurch Airport for two years.

The project was commissioned by Turning Point 2000 as one of three art projects for the millennium. Marilyn Rea-Menzies, the director/owner of the workshop, says the weavers have included Prime Minister Helen Clark, U.S. first daughter Chelsea Clinton, tapestry designer Phillip Trustrum and project instigator Will Cumming.

Phillip Trustrum's design depicts the word "CHRISTCHURCH" in wavering pink handwriting surrounded by a sky of exploding fireworks, radiant colours and cross-like symbols depicting the cathedral.

Many contributors are visitors to the city and anyone can volunteer time to help. Marilyn and her assistant Alison Stanton give people tuition in weaving before they start.
