City says No! to amalgamation The proposal for an amalgamation between Christchurch and Banks Peninsula was scuppered when city residents voted almost two to one against it. The result of the postal ballot was announced on 18 March. In Christchurch 34,089 voted for amalgamation and 59,954 against. The proposal had been in the pipeline for almost two years, following a petition from Banks Peninsula residents who wanted to see their council amalgamated with Christchurchs. It has been suggested by some that a similar process be started again, however the Local Government Act prevents this for at least three years. The two councils will therefore continue as separate units of government for people in their respective areas, each with its own structure of community boards and council. However, staff of the councils, with staff from other Canterbury councils, will continue to look at further ways of working in tandem to reduce the costs of services, which their councils decide to put in place. |
