Virgin good for city

The Council-owned Christchurch International Airport will be the home base for Pacific Blue, Virgin Blue’s new trans-Tasman airline. Pacific Blue will operate its New Zealand Head Office and home base from Christchurch Airpor t’s new building, Aviation House.

George Bellew, the chief executive of Christchurch International Airport Ltd (CIAL), estimates the deal is worth over $140 million to the South Island. It will boost employment, trade and tourism opportunities, he says. “We are committed to developing South Island tourism business opportunities and are delighted that Virgin Blue recognised the many benefits of operating from the gateway of the South Island," Mr Bellew says.

Glenn Wedlock, CIAL's marketing manager, says Australian research shows that Virgin Blue's discounted air services have given the regions it serves a substantial boost in visitor numbers. "We can expect to see similar results with a substantial increase in travellers to and from Canterbury," he says. Through its holding company, the City Council owns 75 per cent of Christchurch International Airport Ltd.

The other quarter is owned by the Government. Its latest annual dividend payment the City Council was just under $12.5 million. More information about CIAL can be found on the web, at www.christchurch-airport.co.nz
