To city dog owners: well done
The Council's Animal Control section wants to thank all the dog owners in Christchurch who did the right thing and got their animals registered during the June/July period, or have done so since. Over-all compliance at the annual relicencing is up on previous years, with about 24,000 dogs registered by the end of July. And, with an intensive follow-up effort by the section's Animal Control Officers, another 1000 were accounted for by the end of September. "One of the biggest concerns expressed to us by the good dog owners out there has been a belief that the Council should be more rigorous in following up on unregistered dogs" says Mark Vincent, leader of the Animal Control section. "They quite rightly feel that if they pay to register their dogs, then why shouldn't all dog owners, and if everyone contributes then the burden of dog-control funding is spread more fairly." The Council has always followed up on unregistered dogs, but new technology now available to the section makes the task easier and more efficient, and the address of every known unregistered dog should be visited by the end of the year and infringement notices issued to owners where they are found to be keeping an unregistered dog. Owners who may have overlooked registering for the 2003/04 year are encouraged to visit their local Council Service Centre and register as soon as possible. To encourage good dog ownership practices, including registration, the Council offers Responsible Dog Owner status to owners who have established a record of responsible ownership.
