Neighbourhood Week coming up

Now is the time to finalise your plans for this year's Neighbourhood Week (November 1-7) - a chance to get to know the people who live closest to you.

In previous years, neighbours have organised a wide array of activities from barbecues and street parties to planting days at their local park. Several Community Boards have funding to go towards Neighbourhood Week events, so get planning and approach your local service centre to make an application.

Time is also running out to enter this year's Sea Cruises Neighbourhood Week draw. To win one of 50 tickets for two for a local cruise, simply write your name, address and telephone number on the back of an envelope and send it to Sea Cruises Competition, Papanui Service Centre, PO Box 5142, by October 15. The complimentary cruises will sail on Saturday 1 November, 5-7pm and 7.30-9.30pm.

Among the Neighbourhood Week events that will be open to everyone are:

  • The Shirley/Papanui Community Board's Children's Day at the Groynes - Sunday 2 November, 11am - 3pm. A variety of activities are planned for the day including live stage performances, a noddy train, bouncy castle, boating and kite flying. The day will be based on the theme "Children's Health". A range of activities and information will be available for children and families, promoting active and healthy living. If wet, the day will be postponed until Sunday 9 November, 11am- 3pm.
  • Community walks in the Spreydon/Heathcote area, hosted by Graeme Stanley, including: Addington Bush, Woods, Mill, Cottages, Curiosities Crawl - November 4, starting 10.30am at Manuka Cottage, 45 Dickens St. Notable women of Opawa - November 5, starting 10.30am at Waltham Community House, 201 Hastings St East.
