Local art projects get financial boost

Seventy-two local community based arts and cultural projects have received grants in Creative New Zealand’s Communities Grants Scheme latest funding round.

The grants, worth almost $90,000, were made to specific community arts and cultural projects taking place in Christchurch, which benefit Christchurch citizens. The largest grant, of $4000, was made to the Christchurch Community Arts Council to put towards the planning of a regional arts guide. Eighty-five applications were received, the majority being for performing arts and visual arts projects.

The Christchurch City Council has worked in partnership with Creative New Zealand since 1995 to distribute funds to local projects that make the arts more accessible to people, and increase community interest and participation.

The City Council administers the arts funding locally. Each year it receives $5000 plus 60 cents per resident (around $200,000 for 2002/03) from Creative NZ.

This is split in to two funding rounds, the first for projects that start after 1 June, and the second for projects that begin after 1 December. Applications for the next funding round close on 28 September.

An information evening about the scheme is being held on Thursday 8 August from 6-8pm in the Elizabeth Kelly Room at the Arts Centre.

For application forms and more information, call the Council Arts Advisers, Marlene Le Cren on 941 8886, or Rhonda Thomson (Arts Adviser Maori & Cultural) on 941 6413).
