Drivers or dunes

If you walk, horse ride, drive or fish the beaches north of the city, you may wish to have a say on Environment Canterbury’s Northern Pegasus Bay Coast draft vehicle access strategy. It suggests controlling vehicle access to beaches in Waimakariri and Hurunui to help protect native plants and birds which reside in the sand dunes and ease safety concerns created by people and vehicles using these beaches.

The strategy, submission forms and the Drivers or Dunes? brochure are available at the City Council’s City Libraries and Service Centres, or on the web at www.ecan.govt.nz/Coast and clicking on Pegasus Bay. Submissions, which can be made online, close on 30 August and a hearings panel will sit in September.

For more information, contact Brian Milne at Waimakariri District Council on (03) 313 6136 or Emma Frazer at Hurunui District Council on (03) 314 8816.
