Unique track along railway
It runs from Fendalton Road in the south to Northcote Road in the north of the city. The combined way that runs most of its length along the railway line was initially raised as a concept in the late 1970s. By the early 1980s, half, from St James Park to Northcote Road, was developed. Then in 1996 the project was revised and after five years of planning, design and consultation several stages were built between St James Park and Fendalton Road. The final stage from Fendalton Road to Matai Street will be constructed soon. Cyclists and pedestrians use it frequently, especially school children. The cycle way has a number of innovative design features, such as traffic signals that sense cyclists approaching and change the signals to green for them. It’s a one-of-a-kind facility in Christchurch and probably in New Zealand. |
