Gardens arbour ready for summer

The new shade arbour within the Botanic Gardens children’s playground.
A shade arbour within the Botanic Gardens children’s playground is nearly completed and will be in time for summer use.

The Friends of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens project will be a fusion of macrocarpa, neo-classical pillars and Halswell stone creating an attractive timeless structure.

A Parthenocissus collection of species (creepers) and cultivars will soften the structure over summer and bathe the arbour in brilliant autumn colour.

The arbour is not only to provide additional seating, shade in summer and an opportunity to display climbing plants, but is also part of a longer-term plan to become the focal point for a new entrance into the play area.

Landscaping will be implemented progressively over the next few years. The Friends of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens have raised money at its annual garden plant sale to finance the project.

Additional funding is being sought to purchase twig character seating that is currently on display in the arbour.

For a gift of $1000, seats will be identified with a plaque dedicated to the donor.
