Cranes dominate the skyline at the Christchurch Art Gallery construction site.
One of the busiest building sites in the city at present is along Worcester Boulevard.

There, the new $39 million Christchurch Art Gallery is taking shape with a handful of cranes dominating the skyline.

Shoring work to retain the basement excavations is completed on the south and east boundaries and about 50 per cent of the north boundary (Gloucester Street) is also finished.

Most of the basement pads have been poured, along with about half of the basement floor slab.

About a third of basement columns and beams to support the ground floor are also installed.

Work is continuing on basement walls, with about 60 per cent of the south and 50 per cent of the east walls constructed.

Some of the ground floor is also finished.

The new Art Gallery is due to open in March 2003.
