Brochure to promote sport

A special brochure has been produced to promote the city as a "sports destination."

The Sports Promotions Team of the Council’s Leisure Unit assists with research, bidding and funding for national and international sports events and the new brochure sets out details of its work in this field.

The Team helps Christchurch clubs, associations and event organisers to promote the city as a sports destination.
Support is given if the sport is part of the national or international calendar, it will be held in Christchurch, and meets other objectives, such as the attraction of visitors to the city.

The Sports Promotions Team also produces a free sports guide for winter and summer sports and will also assist teams and athletes who wish to use the city’s training facilities.

The team’s new-look web site is online.

The site will provide sports minded people with detailed information on Christchurch’s sporting scene. The site will be: www.sportsdestination.christchurch.org.nz.

International sports events to be held in the city, with which the Team has been associated, include: world billiards championships Sept 2001, world bench press champs Dec 2001, blind cricket world cup Dec 2001-JJan 2002, world Rotary cricket festival Feb 2002, ninth FINA world masters swimming champs Feb-Mar 2002, two-day walk March 2002, City Golf Classic April 2002, Oceania International track and field champs Dec 2002, fourth international deaf lawn bowls champs Jan 2003, world wheelchair and amputee games early 2003, and world bowls champs Feb-Mar 2008.
