Crossing made easier

Going to school for Birch Grove pupils is easier now that a pedestrian island has been installed in Briggs Road

A kea crossing (swing signs are used but without zebra crossing markings on the carriageway) will soon be operating at this crossing point. When the crossing is operating, and the stop signs swung out, motorists are legally required to stop.

It is planned to replace the give-way control on Briggs Road, near the school, with stop controls.

This will further enhance the safety of children within the school zone.

These initiatives were undertaken by the Road Safety for Schools Steering Group.

The City Council’s steering group identifies concerns schools have about road safety and works to correct them.

This includes sponsorship of three traffic wardens, such as Ted Huria who supervises children crossing Briggs Road.
