WAANANGA RANGATAHI 2000


In 1998 the Broomfield/ Hei Hei Community Development Project was initiated as a result of a partnership between the Christchurch City Council, the Riccarton/ Wigram Community Board and Family and Community Division of Anglican Care.
The project employs two community development workers, one of whom works with the local Maori Community.
The need for more culturally appropriate activities for young people was identified by local Maori as a result of several hui.
An invitation was extended to Hornby High School Maori Department to participate in a Waananga (course) which was held at Koukourarata (Port Levy) Marae on the 24th to 28th of July 2000.
It was attended by sixty young people over a five day period and culminated in a Powhiri which they also hosted.
The Waananga was an extremely successful event as indicated by the above comments written by the young people who participated.
Wene Hepi, the Community Development Worker for Maori and Te Paea Whanga Morris wish to acknowledge those that supported the Kaupapa.
