Award for native gardens

Award for native gardens The City Council and Canterbury Horticultural Society have established a new award for outstanding gardens representing and displaying New Zealand native plants and habitats in Christchurch.

The aim is to recognise gardens that demonstrate "a notable contribution to the city's natural heritage and biodiversity".

It is open to all gardens, private and community owned, and any individual, group or business may make nominations.

Nominations forms are available from September onwards and must be returned to Canterbury Horticultural Centre, PO Box 369, Christchurch (fax 365 2759) by Friday, 29 September.

Judges will be looking for good examples of:

  • Plants/habitats
  • Design and construction
  • Maintenance

Permission to enter gardens will be sought at least a week prior to judging.

Outstanding gardens will be named during Heritage Week next month, 13 - 20 October.

"It's more of an award system than a competition," says Kerry Everingham, Council environmental promotion officer.
