More than a typical writers' festival, Books and Beyond - the Christchurch Book Festival, provides a rare opportunity for readers and writers to see, hear and experience some of the most popular and interesting international, national and local literary craftspeople of our time.

Headlining this year's festival is internationally acclaimed author Frank McCourt.

The international line up also includes Australian author Dorothy Porter, UK science writer Colin Tudge and Australian literary journalist Robert Dessaix.

Special events include a read aloud series for primary schools celebrating the work of local writer Margaret Mahy and a "Dark and Stormy Night" essay competition.

Festival programmes are available from libraries and the Arts Centre.
