Shamed into slowing
It’s the City Council’s speed trailer and it is a useful tool for shaming motorists into complying with the city’s speed restrictions. When the trailer is operating there is an instant affect on the speed of approaching traffic, says the City Streets Unit. If the trailer is used over several days in one location and motorists are seen to be exceeding the speed limit then the police are often called in to assist. The trailer has been booked regularly and schools have been invited to take part in the programme. In the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board area Russley, Burnside, Westburn, and Isleworth schools have made use of the trailer. Its use is free for schools. Some schools have used the trailer for lessons by making tallies of vehicle speeds and the "fines" indicated for excessive speed by vehicles passing the trailer. Residents’ Associations and other organisations can be involved in the operation of the speed trailer by contacting the Council’s Fendalton office, ph 3517 109. |
