Bid to improve habitat at Yaldhurst Bush Reserve

A proposal to divert a stock water race into parts of the Yaldhurst Bush Recreation Reserve will provide more habitat opportunities as well as improving the growing environment.

The six-hectare reserve, on the corner of the Old West Coast and Main West Coast roads, has been progressively planted over the last few years by the City Council’s Parks and Waterways Unit.

The general concept is to develop the reserve using natives to provide a peaceful area.

The Selwyn Stock Water Race runs along the Main West Coast Road boundary of the reserve before ending at the southern boundary.

Any excess water is returned to the ground through a soak pit.

Divert water race
The present proposal is to divert the water race into parts of the reserve to improve growing conditions.

The Yaldhurst Primary School has had an association with the reserve for many years and on Arbor Day carried out more planting.
