Tips for summer gardening to help conserve water

Christchurch is known as the Garden City and with the warm spring this year the city is indeed blooming moving into summer.

Many residents spend hours in their gardens and as the warmer weather arrives their use of gardening water rises. On hot days the demand put on city water supplies can increase by more than four times the average.

Often when we feel hot and thirsty we believe our gardens are the same way, and we water them. But this is not the best time for either the plants or the water supply when it’s hot, the water evaporates and plants can be burnt.

The Council, in partnership with garden centres across the city, is running a Be WaterWise In Your Garden campaign. The aim is to provide simple tips to keep gardens green and reduce the water wastage. Garden Centre staff are offering advice about the needs of your garden and what best suits your conditions.

Follow the tips (there’s one below and three others on following pages) and you`ll be helping to make sure Christchurch and its beautiful gardens continue to enjoy what many say is the best water in the world. Every drop counts.
