Spotlight on senior sports
The first month of 2006 will be a bumper one for sporting buffs as two great veterans events are due to be held in the city. Both are supported by the City Council, so if you come across a group of these sportspeople or their supporters please give them a warm welcome to our city.
First up is the 2006 Australia-New Zealand Veterans Tennis Championships, in which the national tournaments of the two countries’ senior tennis associations will be combined for the first time in many years.
More than 130 teams are expected to take part and entry to spectators is free.
This event, to be run at Scenic Circle Hotels Tennis Centre at Wilding Park and several other host clubs, will start on the 9 January with the teams competition. The individual competition runs 16-20 January.
From 14-21 January sports fans can watch competitors here for the 2006 Oceania Masters Athletics Championships.
About 400 athletes from Australia, Pacific Island countries and throughout New Zealand, aged from 30 to over 80, are expected to compete in a track and field events, cross-country, walking and a half marathon. The stadia events will be at QEII Park.
