Shirley/Papanui Community Board Heritage Awards
Two historic residences at Kapuatohe Historic Reserve, Main North Road, were deserving winners recently of the Shirley/Papanui Community Board’s 2005 Supreme Heritage Award.
The Heritage Awards are an annual event funded by the Board to acknowledge the preservation and restoration of local heritage and to encourage individuals and groups to take pride in it.
Judges Councillor Anna Crighton QSO JP, Council Assistant Heritage Planner Amanda Ross and John Ryan of Rehua Marae were impressed with the “total heritage package” which the two residences presented, commenting favourably on the ways in which the heritage features of each building had been retained and, in particular, the attractive settings of woodland and gardens surrounding the houses.
Other successful entrants included a private residence in Matsons Avenue (Good Caretaker Award), Edgeware Croquet Club (Retention of Building), and Kapuatohe Historic House (Conservation and Restoration). Commendations were also awarded to private residences in Gordon Avenue (Retention of Building) and Woodville Street (Good Caretaker).
