Sandilands properties to be fixed
The Council will put right a dozen Sandilands properties that have been shown to be contaminated. The work should be done by early in the New Year.
The Council last month considered a staff report about this, which said the Ministry for the Environment has agreed to fund $212,500 of the expected total remediation cost of $806,000. The Council will pay the balance, $593,500.
The dozen properties are among 93 on the former Sandilands landfill site that were originally tested for soil contaminants. Of those, the 12 properties were recommended for treatment to deal with contamination. Tests carried out on the remaining 81 properties found they did not exceed the accepted Ministry for the Environment guidelines for contaminated land.
Sandilands covers 12.5ha that was once a Council landfill. It was covered and developed for housing just after World War Two. |
