Modern Korean creativity

The relationship between art and daily life — an important aspect of contemporary Korean art practice — is explored in Alchemy of Daily Life, a spec-tacular exhibition showing at Christchurch Art Gallery until the end of February.

Our gallery is the only Australasian venue for this display of 26 sculptures, the first time a modern art exhibition from South Korea has been to New Zealand.

Felicity Milburn, the Gallery’s Curator of Contemporary Art, says Alchemy focuses on the ways artists create fascinating and surprising works from ordinary materials, including mass-pro-duced consumer products, many of which are specific to Korea.

“Like their international counterparts, many contemporary Korean artists continue to use techniques of assemblage and transformation in their work, often with stunning results,” she says. “Some of the artists use the accumulation of ordinary objects to create remarkable visual effects.”

The exhibition is supported by a major grant from the Korea Foundation and by the Asia New Zealand Foundation and has been timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of Christchurch’s Korean sister-city link with Songpa-Gu.
