High schools work towards sustainability
Linwood College and Lincoln High School are the first two Canterbury high schools to receive Enviroschools Awards.
Last month at the Environment Canterbury (ECan) Offices, representatives of the schools celebrated receiving Bronze Awards. The other successful Enviroschools Awards recipients are listed at the end of this report.
Linwood College earned its award for introducing wastepaper recycling throughbout the school and encouraging student initiatives. Lincoln High’s was for rehabilitation work begun on the old quarry, Mahoe Reserve. Its students were also instrumental in setting up a plastic bottles and paper recycling scheme as an alternative to burning waste items.
The Enviroschools Awards scheme aims to involve the whole school — students, teachers, non-teaching staff, trustees and members of the local community — with increasing participation as the school works across the three awards levels. By starting at the bronze level and working through silver to green-gold, schools progressively guide the whole school to adopt a sustainable lifestyle, one that will improve and enhance the environment.
The Enviroschools Canterbury partnership has come together to roll out the Enviroschools Programme and Awards Scheme across the region. Involved in the partnership along with the City Council and ECan are the Waimakariri District Council, Christchurch College of Education, Department of Conservation, Kidsfirst Kindergartens and World Wide Fund for Nature.
The awards scheme is seen as a stepping stone for those participating schools willing to take on the programme. For more information on the national Enviroschools Programme and Awards scheme, look online at www.enviroschools.org.nz
