Four partners sign Pacific protocol
Some of the city’s biggest service providers have signed a Protocol of Agreement which aims to improve Pacific people’s economic, social and cultural outcomes in Christchurch.
On 18 November, about 80 representatives from the city’s Pacific communities witnessed the protocol signing by the chief executives of the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs, the City Council, Canterbury District Health Board, and Canterbury Development Corporation.
City Council chief executive Lesley McTurk says the protocol recognises the unique place Pacific people have in Christchurch. The signatories will work together across the sectors to improve Pacific input to the city. The parties agree to work closely together with the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs to increase Pacific communities’ participation in their city’s vision for its future.
This will be done through:
- Improved effectiveness of policy advice to local and central government about Pacific issues
- More Pacific-responsive and effective services and support, and
- More effective monitoring and evaluation of the parties’ responsiveness to the needs of Pacific peoples in the city.
The chief executives of the partner organisations have agreed to meet annually to discuss and review their respective strategic directions and key priorities for the coming year regarding appropriate initiatives that aim to improve the lot of Pacific people.
Reverend Lapana Faletolu of St Paul’s Trinity Pacific Presbyterian Church, Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore, City Council Chief Executive Dr Lesley McTurk, Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs Chief Executive Fuimaono Les McCarthy, and Canterbury District Health Board Chief Executive Gordon Davies enjoy some banter as they listen to Chris Pickrill, Chief Executive of the Canterbury Development Corporation — one of four partners in the protocol.
