Teresa Ropiha greets visitors at a recent community celebration to mark refurbishment of the Hei Hei hall.

The Wycola Park gathering was part of Neighbourhood Week events around the city. About 900 people turned up, being entertained by local performances such as the talented rock‘n roll club, line dancers, a brass band, community rangatahi idol and Hornby Idol winners.

There were stalls in the hall offering information about health and the area’s residents and community groups and local clubs.

Free activities on the day included kite-making, balloon creations, basketball, hockey and card-making. Many people volunteered their time, others offered prizes and there was a lot of community support for the event.

The hall upgrade has created a warm, colourful, inviting and safe place for community recreation.
