Teachers, break out of the classroom

Teachers, grab your diaries and year planners and give some thought to when you would like to book a Learning Through Action programme for Term 1 of 2006.

The word is out on the support the Learning Through Action programmes offer teachers as an introduction to a range of topics and the programme timetable for next year is filling fast.

Thanks to funding from the LEOTC (Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom) programme within the Ministry of Education, the City Council is able to provide school groups with free, in-depth, hands-on educational experiences taught by experts in a range of fields.

Free, in-depth, hands-on educational experiences taught by experts.

To whet your appetite, here is a small selection of new and improved programmes that have been added to the line up. All programmes rely on making the most of the students’ senses to enrich the learning process and some of the ways this is done is touched on here:

  • The Water for Life programme is based at the Water Pumping Station and the focus is on water supply and conservation. Students are tested on the messages learnt on this programme through a game of Snakes and Ladders with a twist. A large scale board game is run using students as board pieces (shown at right). Student groups can advance their human markers by correctly answering questions about water use.
  • Creative and Native looks at our local biodiversity and is staged at the Botanic Gardens and the Christchurch Art Gallery. The backdrop for this programme — the New Zealand Garden — creates a sense of adventure, allowing students to step bactk in time to an era of haunting bird calls, soaring predator eagles and towering moa.
  • A Blast from the Past has been given a face-lift. This programme takes us back to the days of a working quarry and the social and environmental issues faced. Students get to work up a sweat by experiencing the hard physical labour required to build a stone wall.
  • If you are teaching at one of the few schools yet to take advantage of the Learning Through Action programme, we encourage you to visit the www.ccc.govt.nz/learningthroughaction website. There, you can look at the map showing where the programmes take place, the activities provided and their curriculum links. You can also phone Andrea Taylor on 941 8298. There is no charge for this service. See you out there.
