Heathcote River Day on 26 Nov

Heathcote River Day is a local favourite and it’s back again this year on Saturday, 26 November, so it’s time to start gathering a team and building your raft.

The Council-supported journey down the river — with homemade rafts, canoes and all sorts of watercraft — starts at 2.30pm from outside the Waltham Lido Pool. It is fun for those on the water and great entertainment for spectators.

Categories include family and senior, with spot prizes for the design and decoration of craft, fair play, loudest raft, muddiest participant and best-dressed.

The prize giving and a sausage sizzle will be held at the St Martins Scout Den on Centaurus Road.

Registration is on the day from 1pm outside Waltham Lido Pool on Waltham Road, and is free. The race starts at 2.30pm, rafts are put in at the Waltham Road Bridge and float to the start line at Ensors Road. Race information packs are available from the City Council’s Beckenham Service Centre/South Christchurch Library (just south of the Heathcote River bridge on Colombo Street).

Organised by local community organisations in partnership with Christchurch City Council, Heathcote River Day is funded by the City Council’s Spreydon/Heathcote Community Board. If the weather’s too unpleasant, the event will be on Sunday, 27 November.
