Even sitting, the surf’s up at New Brighton

Surfboard seats and a new seaside-themed playground are being introduced as part of the continuing redevelopment of New Brighton Mall.

The new slow road through the mall will also provide ample footpath area to retain access to shops and businesses and space for cafe seating. Work is continuing on the wider mall redevelopment work.

Works for the slow road are programmed to be completed by the end of November, including realignment of the Seaview Road and Hardy Street intersection. The official opening of the road will coincide with the New Brighton Christmas Parade on Saturday, 3 December.

On 7 September the Burwood/Pegasus Community Board approved the siting of the new playground on the east side of the slow road, outside the New Brighton Denture Clinic, where it will be sheltered from the easterly.

Equipment from the old playground will be used elsewhere in New Brighton.

The new equipment will be unique, with a seaside theme and will double as an artwork. A barrier to discourage children from running onto the road will also be installed.

Space for performing arts and events, such as Buskers Festival performances, is available at the western end of the mall’s pedestrian section.

Further developments in the commercial area include a tidy-up of Beresford Street between Union Street and Marine Parade.
