Nominations for community heritage awards now open

The Community Heritage awards, a joint initiative with Rehua Marae, aim to celebrate and encourage projects that promote and restore buildings, places and objects that form part of our cultural heritage.

The awards include initiatives that revisit the activities of people and events of historical significance to the Shirley/Papanui ward. They are to encourage individuals and groups to take pride in their local heritage. There are a number of categories:

Cultural and/or Spiritual Significance
An initiative that is involved in the education and awareness of an object, building, place, person or event of cultural or spiritual significance.

Children
Three sections: 5-10 years, 11-12 years, 13-18 years with a $250 first prize for each category. Projects undertaken by children and youth focusing on heritage. A broad category that may, for example, include essays or projects in schools focusing on an event, place, person or object of significance to the heritage of our community.

Education and Awareness
Initiatives undertaken by individuals or community groups to promote heritage education and awareness. Projects such as the implementation of heritage trails or articles in local publications, books and the media.

Good Caretaker

This includes a building or object previously under threat of demolition now secured by either private or community initiative.
