Belfast celebrates historic reserve

In early March, the Kapuatohe Historic Reserve was open to Christchurch residents.

The day’s events included crafts stalls, Clydesdale horse rides, music and wonderful Devonshire teas. The opportunity to visit the reserve is only available twice a year. Located on the reserve are a schoolhouse built in 1877, a crofter’s cottage and the Belfast Museum. In the 1970s the schoolhouse was under threat from demolition until residents from Belfast formed a committee to save it. It is now listed as a heritage building, and is administered by the City Council in association with a management committee of representatives of Belfast residents.

The museum is open on the first Sunday of each month from 2pm to 4pm from September to May. This is lovely trip down memory lane, well worth a visit. Kapuatohe Historic Reserve is located at 665 Main North Road.

Please contact Sheryl Killick at Papanui Service Centre, 941 5410 for more information.
