Events add colour, vitality

L.Y.F.E (Linwood Youth Festival Experience) hummed at Linwood Park in November 2003, The Rocky Horror Picture Show entertained outdoor movie goers at Woolston Park in February, the Bromley Carnival held at Bromley Park in February was a great success, and the Inner Eastern Multicultural Festival held in March was an event not to be missed.

These fabulous events and many more smaller scale neighbourhood events are thanks to the contribution by many dynamic people, groups and organisations in the Hagley/Ferrymead community.

Community events are one way community spirit can be fostered and provide a medium to bring people of all ages, and cultural backgrounds together within a fun, positive environment. Events provide the opportunity for communities to celebrate and share their experiences and differences, talents and knowledge.

Experience L.Y.F.E
Planning is under way already for the 2004 Linwood Youth Festival (L.Y.F.E).

What makes L.Y.F.E so special is that youth of Linwood are involved in the entire planning process for the event. On the day, that hard work pays off as local bands and performing groups take to the stage and Linwood Park comes alive with sound, activities and food. It is also a good opportunity for organisations supporting youth and providing useful services, to promote what they do.

"The experience of planning a major event is something that these young people will always remember. It can be frustrating and lots of hard work at times, but it is also incredibly satisfying - good friendships are made, it's funand lots of new skills are learnt along the way," says Diana Saxton, Community Recreation Advisor.

If you would like to be involved in L.Y.F.E 2004 please contact Diana Saxton on 941 6628.

Bromley Carnival a success
The Bromley Carnival, co-ordinated by the Bromley Residents Inc and held in February, just keeps on building on the success of previous carnivals. This year's event was held for the first time at Bromley Park and featured thesounds of Strawberry Strum, Harley rides, line dancing, bouncy castle and carnival rides, stalls run by localcommunity groups, children's relays and the Bromley Bulletin Trophy Race.

Community event planning
Due to an overwhelming response to a seminar held last year on planning and running a community event, another seminar will be held in April.

If you would like to attend the seminar or have any questions regarding events in your local community please contact Diana Saxton, Hagley/Ferrymead Community Recreation Advisor, Christchurch City Council on 941 6628.
