Avonhead Park enhancement soon to get under way

Plans to enhance Avonhead Park are set to get under way early May.

City Council Parks and Waterways Advocate Jill Gordon says the plans, which have been designed by the City Council in consultation with local residents, cater for all age groups who use the park.

“Consultation with residents highlighted a lack of recreational facilities for children and strong suppor t for more walkways around the park.”

As a result, the plans will see new tennis and basketball courts installed and large “artificial” rocks to serve as climbing walls. Landscaping and planting will also be undertaken.

“The park is popular with walkers, so we’re also extending the existing path networks and have requested some additional funding from the City Council to complete this project in the future,” she says.

The budget allocated by the Council this year to enhance the park is $108,000.

Jill says that completing the walkway around the park was also identified as a priority by local residents.

“While there is no budget at this stage to complete the perimeter walkway, the Fendalton/Waimiari Community Board has requested $140,000 from the Council to complete it in the future.”

Work on the park should be completed by July this year.
