Seafront landmark set for revamp

Work is planned to begin soon on the major refurbishment of the North New Brighton War Memorial Community Centre located on Marine Parade by Thomson Park.

This work will bring the centre up to standard for current and future community purposes as a multi-functional facility. More opportunities will be provided for recreation and the centre will be able to cater for a wider range of community uses.

Incorporation of a community café is currently being investigated. The unique beach setting of the centre makes it an ideal location for sea and beach-related community activities.

Funding for the refurbishment and seismic upgrade of the centre has been allocated by the Council and the Burwood/Pegasus Community Board.

The centre was built in 1925 to commemorate the First World War and was dedicated as a peace memorial, originally being called the North Beach Peace Memorial Hall.

The original building has been modified significantly over the years. In recent years, use of the facility has been restricted as a result of fire safety concerns and concerns about emergency exits.

There is considerable community support for continued use of the facility. The North New Brighton Residents’ Association and the user groups are thrilled at the prospect of the refurbishment. The community has been instrumental in securing the funding for the upgrade.

The refurbishment is planned to be completed by the end of 2004. The centre should then provide a well-maintained, safe, user friendly, accessible and affordable facility for many more years.
