Developments at reserve under way
Exciting plans are being developed for further facilities in the Horseshoe Lake Reserve and for the enhancement of the wetland itself. The community is heavily involved in planning and
planting activities. Visitors are already reaping the recreational and ecological rewards of the work being done. A long-term vision for the reserve was established in the Landscape Master Plan adopted by the Council in 2002. The plan balances a range of recreational requirements with drainage, cultural and ecological values and demands of a significant wetland located within an urban
environment. Over the next five years the Council has budgeted more than $350,000 to develop the reserve. Priorities for this spending have been set in consultation with the community.
Infrastructure items are planned to enhance recreational opportunities within the reserve. Educational activities are also catered for. Major developments include: Additional toilet and interpretative facilities are planned, as well as ongoing planting and pathway upgrading. The Burwood/Pegasus Community Board has also provided ongoing funding for specific enhancements in the reserve. In 2004/05 the Community Board is contributing $2000 to the restoration of an island in the reserve to recreate the habitat for native wildlife. |
