What coffee in Belfast can lead to . . . It started over coffee. A few people with church affiliations in Belfast got together over coffee one day and a year later a network of some 20 people representing various community agencies now meets regularly. In the course of a year the Belfast Community Network has expanded to include churches, schools, sports clubs and other agencies with an interest in the wellbeing of Belfast. Wishing to capitalise on the enthusiasm of the network, a legally constituted organisation is about to arise in Belfast. With the desire to employ a Belfast Community Co-ordinator, this energetic group has already received some funding for this from the Shirley-Papanui Community Board. The suburb is well serviced by a number of enthusiastic and skilled leaders, but the network has identified a lack of co-ordination. With the Belfast population expected to almost double within the next few years, the need for co-ordination is seen as an urgent. Although the project has been initiated by a number of social and community agencies in Belfast, the network remains an open grouping. Other social and community groups are welcome to attend and make their views known.
