Drinking at two levels

Just before she died author and peace worker Elsie Locke attended the commissioning of a futuristic drinking fountain beside the new Centennial Pool.

An adjacent reserve is named after Elsie Locke, who was a regular user of the pool.

The striking stainless steel and glass water feature has two drinking fountains at different levels.

It was designed by Pippin Wright-Stow, a student at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, and several local firms — Burns and Ferrall Ltd, Pilkington (NZ) Ltd and W J Reynolds — were involved in the construction.

The fountain was partly funded by Brierley Investments Ltd which gave the Council $20,000 several years ago when it held its annual meeting in the city.

The then Mayor,Vicki Buck, suggested the money be used for a play structure in Victoria Square but after public consultation it was decided it was not suitable for the square. A Council sub-committee decided a water feature should be placed near the Centennial Pool as one was originally included in the redevelopment plans but it did not go ahead at the time of construction.
