City to host cyclists' meeting

Christchurch will hold the third New Zealand Cycling Conference in September.

It is expected to attract up to 300 cyclists, engineers, planners, politicians and people from the health and education fraternities.

All will be involved in conference sessions dealing with ways to increase cycling in New Zealand.

One of the guest speakers will be Karel de Roy from Utrecht, Netherlands, which has achieved up to 25 per cent of its commuter population cycling to work.

The Associate Minister of Transport, Judith Tizard, will address the 21-22 September conference at the Chateau on the Park on "the status of the national transport strategy."

Others speakers will cover subjects from cycle tourism to economic analyses of cycle facilities.
