Bridging the digital divide

Richard Webb is trying to bridge the digital divide at Manuka Cottage in Addington.

He says the digital divide is the latest technological term for "those who have access to computers and the Internet and those who don’t."

A research project was funded by the Community Employment Group with assistance from the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board, Addington Bush, the Addington Business People’s Association, the Addington Neighbourhood Association and Manuka Cottage.

These organisations formed the Addington Net and will become a charitable trust.

Its objective is to make the Internet accessible and affordable to the Addington community.

So Richard Webb was engaged to work at the Cottage in Dickens Street teaching computer literacy.

The training is free and available to all in the community.

A further step in the project will be to create an Internet centre which could be at Addinton Mall.
