Riccarton street gets award

Peverel Street, the City Council’s first Living Street, has won a Creative NZ award.

The Creative Places Urban and Landscape Design Award was made at the recent Local Government NZ Conference.

Living Streets are designed or re-designed with the priority on living and community interaction where "residents, businesses, pedestrians and cyclists have equally with cars."

Peverel Street has a water theme with four features: a fountain, a viewing window into a subterranean spring, and a footpath based on the meandering of a braided river and seating around a well.

The judges said the street’s design was "leading edge .... that has its heart in creating community pride and ownership." They also liked the involvement of children in the project.
