News In Brief Second Biggest The City Council's housing portfolio, the second biggest in New Zealand, now totals more than 2650 with a capital value of $115 million. Since 1996, the Council has built four new housing complexes at a cost of more than $10 million. Anniversary Parade Three squadrons of the Air Training Corps will hold their 60th anniversary parade in Christchurch on Sunday, 2 September. The squadrons are No. 17 (City of Christchurch), No. 18 (Avon) and No. 38 (Waimairi). A request has been made to the City Council that the freedom of the city is granted to the squadrons. Welfare Funds Assistance given by the Mayor's Welfare Fund in the six months until June totalled $94,969 and this compared to $128,913 paid out in the same six months last year. New changing rooms for QE11 A new foyer and changing rooms have opened at QE11 Leisure Centre. The opening of the new men's and women's changing facilities ends more than seven months of customers using temporary facilities. Signage is in place to help familiarise people with the new changes. Rubbish bag savings A provisional cost saving of $55,000 has been made by the Council on the new rubbish bag delivery system. A report to the Council said the public reaction was generally positive although some concern was expressed about the cessation of free bag delivery to community centres. Most residents took their full allocation of 52 bags.
