Trees hit by storm to be replanted

Replanting of trees in areas devastated in last October’s southerly storm will begin in the next year.

The storm uprooted and severely damaged thousands of trees in city streets, parks and plantations.

The loss of many of the trees has had a significant impact on the city’s landscape and has also left some areas of the Port Hills exposed to soil erosion.

In response, the Council has earmarked funding in the draft Annual Plan to start a replanting programme which will include planting large trees to fill gaps in urban areas and another 37,000 trees on the Port Hills to replace plantation losses.

Community groups will help with these planting projects.

The Parks and Waterways Unit will also receive more money to buy land alongside waterways.

This will enable land to be bought in advance of development and ensure that sufficient space is available to create a naturalised drainage system.

This will have benefits of improving wildlife habitats, protection of heritage features, provision of recreational opportunities and meeting flood-plain management requirements.

This initiative is an investment in sustainability that will, in the long-term, bring a reduction in capital expenditure with less need for high-cost piping methods.
