The western end redevelopment proposal includes a one-way slow vehicle lane. Vehicles will enter from Seaview Road and exit from Oram Avenue. The vehicle lane will include a limited number of short-term parking bays enabling the dropping off and picking up of shoppers. The lane will be only 4m wide, leaving 16m for a footpath adjoining shops New trees will be planted in this area in a layout similar to the palms at the eastern end of the mall. New seats, bins and lighting will also be included. A new, green area, incorporating children’s playground equipment, will be provided in the Oram Avenue part of the Mall. The Mall development is part of a renewal package that includes alterations to adjoining car parks. The Council’s car park in Beresford Street will be upgraded, by narrowing Beresford Street, enabling the car park to be extended closer to the mall. Pedestrian access and lighting will be improved Private owners will undertake alterations to the layout and amenity of Hawke Street car park. The redevelopment of the west end of the mall is part of the Council’s ongoing investment in the New Brighton areaLatterly this has included the building of the pier, the library, foreshore enhancement and the east end of the mall, as well as staging of events, such as Guy Fawkes night. The overall aim is to attract more people to live in and visit the New Brighton area In order to introduce a vehicle lane, the Council needs to start a formal road-opening procedure. As part of this, the public will be invited to make submissions where they can comment on the proposal. This will be the next step in the redevelopment process and it is expected to begin about mid-year. The public will be notified when this will happen in the public notices of Christchurch newspapers.
