Blenheim Rd changes in plan

New curbs and road being laid
Damaged road edges
Three big projects will be tackled by the City Streets Unit in the coming financial year

They are the Blenheim Road deviation that will cost about $9 million spread over three years; the upgrading of Fendalton Road at a cost of $3 million over the next two years; and stage two of the Woolston-Burwood Expressway at a cost of $3 million, also spread over two years.

Stage one of the expressway is due for completion in July. Anzac Drive, part of stage one, is already in use.

The City Streets Unit has an extensive programme of work each year and it will continue to maintain this under this year’s annual budget. Its total capital expenditure for the financial year, before Transfund NZ subsidies, is $37 million.

Every year the unit replaces 20km of the old road dish channels, mainly in the suburbs.

This work, to cost about $8 million, is carried out in association with landscaping and berm enhancement.

Another large item, which costs about $6 million, is the resurfacing of footpaths and the resealing of roads and the smoothing of carriageways.

This is much more than last year due to the huge increase in the cost of bitumen which has risen by $370 a tonne from last year’s price of $470 a tonne.

Other major works to be carried out include the Ferry Road-Humphreys Drive intersection where traffic lights will be installed and the roads alteredThese changes will cost $650,000

Some of the safety improvements will be seen on Evans Pass Road ($150,000) and at the intersection of Milnes-Sparks-Sutherland roads at a cost of $160,000.

A sum of $1 million has been included in the draft budget for Stage five of Cathedral Square and improvements will start once the final buses leave and the Council approves the concept.

Another $1 million will be spent on putting Real Time Information at major bus stops across the city.

About $1 million will be set aside over two years to redevelop the New Brighton Mall, with half this cost to be repaid by local businesses
