In a nutshell . . .

Money for art:
Fundraisers for the Christchurch art gallery due to be built in the next few years will be much closer to their $13 million target when they receive a recently-announced $6.2M contribution from the Government. To date $5.9M has been raised through grants and gifts in Canterbury. "Our fundraising committees, very generous donors, corporate sponsors and The Community Trust are all to be congratulated and thanked," says Robert McDougall Art.

Gallery director Tony Preston. Christchurch City Council is the key provider of the $47.5M cost of the gallery and land (a Worcester Boulevard-Montreal Street-Gloucester Street site). When Prime Minister and Minister for Art, Culture and Heritage Helen Clark announced the Government contribution late last month, she said the new gallery would be a major arts and economic asset for Canterbury and would contribute directly to tourism earnings.
New Jazz Sponsor:
National law firm Buddle Findlay has secured naming rights for the Christchurch International Jazz Festival (11-19 August). Festival producer Arts Centre Productions say: "We're looking forward to staging the largest jazz festival ever produced in the South Island". Among those headlining this year's festival are international jazz singer Elaine Delmar (UK); composer, arranger and musician Alan Slater (Australia) and trombone master Bruce Paulson (US).
